Kumho Tire will strengthen its research and development capability by establishing a new central R&D center in Yongin, a suburban city south of Seoul. According to the company on April 17, its new R&D facility will be built in the city of Yongin at a 34,800-square-meter site. The construction will set to begin with September this year as the completion date.
A Kumho Tire official said, "Of the 400 R&D staff members in Gwangju R&D center, 200 will be moved to Yongin in stages. As the Gwangju location will serve as a production and test site, about 200 staffers will remain."
Once the Yongin center is up and running, it will play the role of an R&D hub taking control of the company's R&D facilities across the world, including the ones in Akron (U.S.), Birmingham (UK), and Tianjin (China), as well as Gwangju.
The main reason that the company has decided to build the new R&D center near Seoul, according to Kumho Tire, was to attract high-caliber talents. The same company official said, "Until now, we have had difficulties finding talents as they prefer workplaces close to the Seoul Metropolitan area."
